What to Watch this Weekend (8/19-8/21)

Friday August 19

  • 1500  -  Premier League  -  Manchester United v Southampton  -  USA  -  The first Friday match of the season. Terrible.
  • 1630  -  Women's Olympic Soccer Final  -  Sweden v Germany  -  NBCSN  -  I gave up when USWNT went out to a bunch of cowards that then beat the host and are in the final. ugh.
  • 1900  -  USL  -  Red Bulls II v Louisville City FC  -  Youtube  -  The two top teams in USL in a playoff preview.

Saturday August 20

  • 1230  -  Premier League  -  Leicester City v Arsenal  -  CNBC  -  Both losers from week one of the league but the Champions are coming into this game thee favorite.
  • 1445  -  Serie A  -  Juventus v Fiorentina  -  beIN Sports  -  Two of the top teams in Italy on the opening weekend of Serie A. Juve sold Pogba but are an even better team than last year.
  • 1500  -  MLS  -  NYCFC v LA Galaxy  -  ESPN  -  Two MLS Cup contenders, one surrising and the other isn't.
  • 1630  -  Men's Olympics Soccer Final  -  Germany v Brazil  -  NBCSN  -  7-1 again?

Sunday August 21

  • 700  -  Championship  -  Ipswich Town v Norwich City  -  beIN Sports Connect  -  The Old Farm Derby. I just wanted to write that name.
  • 2130  -  MLS  -  Seattle Sounders v Portland Timbers  -  FS1  -  Woohoo! another national tv Cascadia match.

Let me know what you think!

What to Watch this Week (June 10-16)

The Euros kick off this week!  We've got group stage games from that tournament, Copa America rolls on, and a few domestic matches. Check it out!

Friday June 10

  • 1500  -  Euros  -  France v Romania  -  ESPN2  -  THE EUROS ARE HERE! This first match isn't supposed to be the greatest football exposition ever as Romania will just defend to the death. France, who are one of the top teams from the midfield forward, will have to break down a side that only conceded two goals in their ten qualification matches. Pray for goals.

Saturday June 11

  • 1900  -  Copa  -  USMNT v Paraguay  -  FOX Sports 1, Univision  -  The final match of the group and the US only needs a draw (unless Costa Rica beats Colombia 6-nil). Even knowing that, I still expect Klinsmann to go for it. Our defense isn't the absolute best so getting goals seems the most likely solution.

  • 2230-  USL  -  LA Galaxy II v Colorado Springs Switchbacks  -  Youtube  -  Two of the three top teams in the West (although Los Dos have played a lot more games). I will always recommend watching LA's b-side as they score a lot of goals but also concede a lot. Fun.

Monday June 13

  • 1500  -  Euros  -  Belgium v Italy  -  ESPN  -  The first big matchup of the tournament is this one. The expanded format means there aren't a ton of big teams meeting in the groups. This is a off-cycle Italy side facing the peak of Belgium's golden generation so Italy will probably win (they usually do in tournaments).

Wednesday June 15

  • 1900  -  US Open Cup  -  Chicago Fire v Indy Eleven  -  Stream  -   The Peter Wilt Derby is on. Eleven have just signed Gerardo Torrado, former Cruz Azul Captain and second most capped Mexican player, but he won't be available after the FIFA window opens on July 4th. This match coming in the middle of the MLS international break so we'll have to see what kind of lineup Fire and 11 put out.

Thursday June 16

  • 900  -  Euros  -  England v Wales  -  ESPN  -  Everyone loves when the home nations get to play against each other and this one will pit Bale against a bunch of his old Spurs teammates. For the record, Wales have never beaten England in a competitive match.

  • 1500  -  Euros  -  Germany v Poland  -  ESPN  -  Poland were the first team to hand the reigning world champions a competitive loss after they were crowned in Brazil and the Germans haven't been their best since. As we saw in Brazil, German sides tend to grow in tournaments so they should be finding some form in this one.

  • 2130  -  Copa  -  Winner Group A v Runner-up Group B  -  FOX Sports 1  -  Ummm... TBD but probably Colombia v Ecuador. That's a pretty classic South American matchup. Colombia has won five out of the last six meetings but anything can happen in tournament football.

Let me know what you think!

What to Watch this Week (June 3-9)

International break for MLS means it's Copa America time! Because of the slowdown in action over the summer, we're switching to a weekly format. Copa, pre-tournament international friendlies, and USL are in here. Read it!

Friday June 3

  • 2130  -  Copa America  -  USMNT v Colombia  -  Fox Sports 1  -  COPA AMERICA CENTENARIO IS HERE! Read about the tournament and why you should care. This is the toughest game of the group for US, you'd prefer to have this one last after Colombia has already qualified but it will be a good match. Personal strory - I'm only going to be able to watch half of this game because I'm going to Rhinehaus, which have so many people inside it will be in firecode violation, and I will leave so that I can breathe.

Saturday June 4

  • 1200  -  International Friendly  -  Germany v Hungary  -  ESPN Deportes  -  After losing 3-1 to Slovakia earlier in the week and 4 out of their last 6, Germany will be looking to stomp someone. Hungary have made it to the tournament from sheer defensive will that Germany will have to break down.
  • 1500  -  International Friendly  -  France v Scotland  -  ESPN 2  -  France haven't played a real, competitive match since 2014 and have a makeshift/old backline that is leaking goals. They should do well in this tournament based on their stellar midfield and attack but come on, play some defense.
  • 2200  -  Copa America  -  Brazil v Ecuador  -  Fox Sports 1  -  The opening game of the tournament for Brazil and against the toughest player in the group, we should see how this Brazil team will play. Ecuador has a very quick team so this one should be back and forth.

Sunday June 5

  • 2000  -  Copa America  -  Mexico v Uruguay  -  Fox Sports 1  -   Suarez may or may not be back for this game, which could decide if El Tri will keep their 8 game winning run going.
  • 2130  -  USL  -  Orlando City B v Louisville City  -  Youtube  -  Go purple teams! Forgotten stepchild LouCity has to spend the night at his dad's house to play his younger stepbrother. They will probably win but still will cry into their pillow.

Monday June 6

  • 2200  -  Copa America  -  Argentina v Chile  -  Fox Sports 1  -  Holders v Favorites. They just played a World Cup Qualifier in Santiago in March which Argentina won 2-1. This one will probably have a similar result.

Tuesday June 7

  • 2000  -  Copa America  -  USMNT v Costa Rica  -  Fox Sports 1  -  Assuming a loss in game one (let's be real here), this game will be win or go home.

Let me know what you think!

What to Watch this Weekend (May 28-29)

Check out this week's top matches including the Champions League final, playoff finals in England and Mexico, domestic action, and pre-tournament International Friendlies.

Saturday May 28

  • 1200  -  Championship Playoff Final  -  Hull City v Sheffield Wednesday  -  beIN Sports  -  Hull come storming into the final with a combined 5-nil trouncing of Derby while Wednesday beat a better Brighton team 3-1. Both of their matches this season in the Championship ended in draws but you have to give the nod to Hull, who were in the Premier league last season.
  • 1445  -  Champions League Final  -  Real Madrid v Atletico Madrid  -  FOX  -  2014 UCL Final part II - this one won't be ruined by Diego Costa going off injured in the 9th minute. This time the team that's not 100% will be Real as Ronaldo limped off in training after a collision with Casilla. Even though Real have had a much better recent record, they haven't looked convincing. I think the discipline of Atleti will lead to them having their revenge and winning their first big-eared trophy.
  • 1700  -  International Friendly  -  Mexico v Paraguay  -  FS1/Go  -  A chance to see two teams that we'll see more of in the Copa. Paraguay is in the USMNT's group and Mexico is my dark horse pick in the tournament.
  • 1900  -  MLS  -  New York Red Bulls v Toronto FC  -  MLS Live  -  If you didn't want Red Bulls trounce NYCFC 7-nil last week, you missed out. Now the face a Toronto side that they're level with on points and it should be a decent matchup.
  • 1930  -  USL  -  Charleston Battery v Louisville City FC  -  Youtube  -  The best team in USL travels to Charleston, a side that does not lose at home. This is attack vs defense 101. This will be fun.
  • 2000  -  International Friendly  -  USMNT v Bolivia  -  FS1/Go, Univision Deportes  -  It is just a friendly but it'll show what Jurgen is thinking as far as team selection going into the Copa.
  • 2100  -  MLS  -  Colorado Rapids v Philadelphia Union  -  MLS Live  -  Can't we just go back to normal so I don't have to keep picking Union and Rapids matches? Just be terrible again!

Sunday May 29

  • 1000  -  English League 1 Playoff Final  -  Barnsley v Millwall  -  Stream  -  The very last of European football before the long summer. If you can find a stream, watch it.
  • 2136  -  Liga MX Clausura Final  -  Monterrey v Pachuca  -  Univision  -  This the second leg of the final and it's 1-nil to Pachuca. There's no away goals, so extra time and penalties will happen if it's still level. This match should be doubly important because Pachuca will be playing Indy Eleven in Indianapolis this summer. The winner of this match will play the Apertura winner, Tigres in July.

Let me know what you think!

What to Watch this Weekend (May 21-22)

Check out this week's top matches including the all the cup finals across Europe, #Heineken #RivalryWeek in MLS, and the first of what will be a packed summer of international games.

Saturday May 21

  • 1230  -  FA Cup Final  -  Crystal Palace v Manchester United -  FOX/Deportes/2Go  -  Crystal Palace are really not that good. They've only won 2 league games in 2016. This United side is far from vintage as well (although they do have a strong defense). Who knows what will happen but I'm guessing it will be boring.
  • 1400  -  DFB Pokal Final  -  Bayern Munich v Borussia Dortmund  -  ESPN3/Deportes  -  Although Bayern won their fourth Bundesliga title in a row, Dortmund pushed them right till the end. This game has a bit more spice because it will be BVB captain Hummels's last game before he walks the well-worn path from Dortmund to Bavaria. The only time Munich have lost a game outright in the last 28 matches in the cup was to Dortmund... twice.
  • 1445  -  Coppa Italia Final  -  AC Milan v Juventus  -  FuboTV  -  Juve came from the depths to win their 5th Scudetto in a row while Milan are still rebuilding and don't even have a permanent manager. This one should be all Juventus.
  • 1500  -  Coupe de France Final  -  Marseille v Paris Saint-Germain  -  beIN Sports  -  Another classic cup final tie between two giants (one of them in name only) in their respective countries, this one is literally Le Classique. Even without Zlatan, the French champions should have no problem beating 13th place OM.
  • 1500  -  MLS  -  NYCFC v New York Red Bulls  -  FOX/Deportes/2Go  -  The Hudson River Derby is no joke, like with fights and hatred and stuff. Both teams are actually quite solid on their day so this would be a good MLS match to watch and it's on network TV.

Sunday May 22

  • 1200  -  International Friendly  -  Puerto Rico v USMNT  -  FS1/2go, Univision Deportes  -  The first match between Puerto Rico and USMNT will have a lot of interesting dynamics. You should definitely watch this one even if it won't have the full roster (No MLS players).
  • 1530  -  Copa del Rey Final  -  Barcelona v Sevilla  -  ESPN2  -  In the last week Sevilla have won the Europa League while Barcelona wrapped up the La Liga title. This game seems to be a walkover for Barca but a win might mean to the Andalusians. If Sevilla can play a tight game and get a goal to hold onto, they might end the year with a cup double.
  • 1900  -  MLS  -  LA Galaxy v San Jose Earthquakes  -  FS1/Deportes/2Go  -  The California Clásico is an actual longterm rivalry during MLS rivalry week. Both sides are good this season (who can tell this early with parity) and their fans really do hate each other.

Let me know what you think!
